Central Checkpoint Expansion Project Begins

June 13, 2025

Press Releases

Starting June 16th, 2025, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) will embark on project to expand the Central Security Checkpoint.

The project will take the space to the north of the checkpoint in front of the current restroom entrance and absorb it into the existing security area footprint to not only allow for 2 more lanes of screening, but to increase queuing space taking it from 120 to over 300 lineal feet.

The stairs and ramp will also be moved to avoid the pinch point that happens currently when the line extends beyond the current queueing space.

The changes will also streamline the CLEAR screening area.

In order to utilize the space in front of the current restrooms, they will be closed and reconfigured so that guests can access them directly from the ticketing level. Guests can utilize the bathrooms located on Baggage Claim across from the Welcome Center during the construction.

To accommodate the expansion, the Interfaith Center will also be closed, as the space will be utilized in the newly expanded checkpoint. It will be relocated just north of the area where it is currently, but there will be a short period of time where we will not have a chapel available for our staff and guests.

During the construction, guests will be able to utilize the checkpoint. The project is expected to be completed in January 2026. Guests will be able to utilize Central Checkpoint as normal during this time frame and CLE will take extra precaution to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations.

The work for the Checkpoint Expansion project will be done by Feghali Brothers Construction and Engineering with a cost of $3.5 million.

The Restroom reconfiguration will be performed by Ozanne Construction Company with a cost of $1.3 million.
