About the Art
February 29 – August 31, 2016
NASA is with you when you fly.
Many airport passengers have gazed across the runway and wondered what is behind the hangar bearing the bold “NASA” lettering. That landmark is an active hangar supporting flight research by the NASA Glenn Research Center which is celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2016. Thanks to NASA, every U.S. aircraft and every U.S. control tower has technology on board to improve your flight.
NASA Glenn is one of the three original NASA centers, originally established as the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory under the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the predecessor to NASA. The fields to the west of Cleveland’s airport, at the site of the National Air Races, were selected for the site of the new Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on January 23, 1941 for what is now known as “Lewis Field.”
