Have you seen five-year-old Great Pyrenees Mazie and her handler Marianne around CLE? This friendly duo joined the Hopkins Hounds Therapy Dog program in February 2026 and have already made a warm impression on travelers and airport staff.
Marianne is no stranger to therapy dog work. Her first Great Pyrenees, Pearl, was certified through Therapy Dogs International, and together they visited nursing homes and Case Western Reserve University during exam season. Now with Mazie and her warm, easygoing personality by her side, Marianne knew she would be the perfect pup to follow in Pearl’s footsteps.
Marianne’s path to becoming a Hopkins Hounds handler began last December while she was waiting for a flight to Las Vegas. She met fellow handler Betsy and her dog Serena, learned more about the program, and later connected with program coordinator Vania. Soon after Marianne returned home, Mazie was evaluated and quickly welcomed onto the team.
Mazie’s calm and friendly nature shines in every interaction. Marianne remembers the first time Mazie approached a traveler using a wheelchair. Although it was something new to her, Mazie handled the interaction with ease. She is also wonderful with young children, helping them feel comfortable around a large dog.
What Marianne loves most is seeing travelers relax and smile, even on hectic days. Mazie has a way of brightening everyone’s day, from passengers and employees to TSA staff.
For anyone considering becoming a Hopkins Hounds handler, Marianne’s advice is simple: “Just do it!”
And as Mazie’s vest proudly says, “Please Pet Me. I’m Friendly!”
She’s here to brighten everyone’s day, one tail wag at a time.
