Concourse C Ramp Replacement This project will result in the replacement of the aircraft-parking ramp surrounding Concourse C. The project will result in the installation of new pavement with a 30-year life span and will bring the ramp into compliance with the current Fire Code by sloping the pavement away from the building rather than towards the Concourse C building, as is the current case. Additional components of the project will improve drainage in this area and make adjustments to the underground fueling system. This project began in 2004 and is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2006.
Ingress Roads Modification
This project will result in the realignment of various roads leading to the Airport entrance. The project will realign/rebuild State Route 237 between Brookpark Road and the Airport entrance and will also realign/rebuild the off-ramps/connect roads from Interstates 480 and 71 to the airport entrance. After completion, traffic will be able to navigate this congested area much more easily. The design of the project will be completed in 2006 and then the construction will be scheduled by Ohio Department of Transportation.
Centralized Deicing Pad and Associated Taxiway Improvements
This project is an environmental compliance mandate imposed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA). The Airport has signed a Consent Order and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit with the OEPA that mandate certain water quality levels must be met by September 2006. The project will construct a centralized pad as Phase II of the Centralized Deicing Facility. The facility will be utilized for deicing operations by all airlines at CLE. Deicing fluids will be collected and disposed of in a manner approved by OEPA. Construction began in September of 2005 and be completed by the Fall of 2006.
Upcoming Projects
Runway 6R/24L Uncoupling and Extension
This project is a safety enhancement mandated by the FAA. In November 2000, the FAA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) requiring that the Airport eliminate the intersection of runways 6R/24L and 10/28. This project will eliminate the last remaining runway intersection at CLE and provide a fully compliant runway safety area for runway 6R/24L. The uncoupling project will relocate the threshold of runway 6R/24L approximately 1,000 feet to the southwest and will construct associated taxiway, infrastructure and navigational aid improvements. In conjunction with this project, the runway will be extended by approximately 2,500 feet to result in a runway length of approximately 11,250 feet. When the runway is completed and fully instrumented, CLE will have the ability to accommodate unrestricted international service to any worldwide destination. Construction related to this project is expected to start in late 2005 and be completed by the Fall of 2007.
