Security Screening

Government-issued photo identification—federal, state or local—is needed by all travelers eighteen years of age and older.  Travelers who are 18 years of age and older who do not possess any government-issued photo identification should carry at least two pieces of identification with them—one of which must have been issued by a government authority.  Travelers may be asked to show their ID at various locations within the airport, including at check-in, screening, in the gate area and/or prior to boarding an aircraft.

Ticketed passengers only are allowed beyond passenger screening points.  Individuals who are not ticketed and who, because of medical, parental or other specific verifiable need, must accompany a ticketed passenger are instructed to contact their airline for instructions on how to accompany a ticketed passenger through a screening point.

The airlines stipulate that carry-on baggage is limited to two items per ticketed passenger, such as one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse or a briefcase.  The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) stipulates that laptop computers and video cameras must be removed from carry-on bags and placed on the belt before these items go through the screening process.  Effective as of April of 2005, the TSA has mandated that ticketed passengers can no longer take cigarette lighters with them through the checkpoint areas.  Each ticketed passenger can take up to four books of matches through a checkpoint area.

Ticketed passengers, who because of medical necessity carry syringes with them, are advised to pack these items in their carry-on baggage.  Medication should be packed in carry-on baggage and be contained in a clearly identified pharmacy-issued medication container.

Ticketed passengers are advised not to attempt to carry beverage containers with them through the checkpoints as to do so may cause delays.

For questions about carry-on baggage, please contact your airline.  For questions about what items can or cannot be carried through the security checkpoint, contact the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at 1.866.289.9673.
